What do I use

Agriculture and food science

Field trials, varietal comparison, storage and processing studies, extension research.

The usual order: Block the field - randomise treatments to plots - analyse at the plot level - separate the means.

Your question, and what answers it

With a post-hoc test that controls the error rate, not a series of t tests.

In ZStat: open your study, go to Analysis, and choose one way anova.

What goes wrong in agriculture and food science

  • Treating fifty plants from one plot as fifty observations. Randomisation was applied to plots, so the plot is the experimental unit and counting plants inflates n dramatically.
  • A completely randomised design on a field with a visible gradient.
ZStat runs these checks whether or not you ask, and stops the analysis when one of them would make the result misleading. You do not have to remember this list.
