What are you trying to do?

Something I need to watch regularly in psychology and behavioural science.

Before you start. Monitors currently run from the command line rather than from a page. The engine works and is tested; the interface for setting them up is still being built, so this route is the least finished of the four.

Your path

01

Create the study

One study holds the whole series.

02

Chart it before you judge it

A control chart separates ordinary variation from a real change. Most month-to-month movement is noise, and acting on it makes a process less stable rather than more.

03

Set up a monitor

A saved analysis with a cadence. It re-runs and reports what moved, without claiming the movement is significant - two consecutive estimates are not independent samples.

04

Read the series, not the last point

Twelve points tell you what one never can.

What people in your field ask

In psychology and behavioural sciencethe full guide

Build the instrument - check it holds together - check it works the same in every group - then compare or model.

  • Does my scale hang together?reliability
  • Is it measuring one thing or several?efa
  • Does the questionnaire mean the same thing to men and women?measurement invariance
  • Did the intervention change anything?repeated measures anova
  • Does X affect Y through M?mediation

Watch for: Reporting alpha as evidence of unidimensionality. It rises with the number of items and a twenty-item scale measuring two things easily exceeds .90.
